To alleviate pain during dental procedures, a patient may experience the induction of a state of insensitivity. This is commonly achieved by applying topical anesthetics, such as a lidocaine (lignocaine) cream or spray, to the surface of the gums before administering a local anesthetic via injection.
In the case of minor procedures, the administration of a local anesthetic involves injecting it either directly into the gum at the targeted area or near the adjacent nerve, a short distance away. This technique, referred to as a peripheral nerve block, ensures localized numbing. On the other hand, for more complex procedures like gum surgery and extraction of multiple teeth, the utilization of general anesthesia is preferred.
