Tooth enamel erosion, often accompanied by the deterioration of dentine (the layer beneath the enamel) and cementum (the bony tissue covering the tooth root), refers to the process of wearing away of the teeth. Dental abrasion commonly occurs as a consequence of overly vigorous tooth brushing.
When areas of the teeth are abraded, they can become sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet food and beverages. In such cases, it may be necessary to use a desensitizing toothpaste and/or apply a protective bonding agent or filling to provide relief and safeguard the affected areas.
