Daydreaming

A state of reverie indulged in while awake. Often called fantasizing, it is definable as a comparatively well-organized, but often illogical, process of sensory thinking where the daydreamer is to all intents and purposes awake, but nevertheless loses partial con¬ tact with his or her surroundings. It is often characterized by a free-flowing internal debate that frequently ends up with talking out loud to oneself. Fantasy is extremely egocentric, dramatic, and often pleasurable. It is thought that what we are doing when daydreaming is trying to actualize our self-image in a positive, self-enhancing way.

Parapsychologists have claimed that during the reverie, supernatural forces move in and orchestrate the various scenarios of the daydream, that something “out there” is taking over. Another viewpoint, in keeping with current research on cognition, is that there is nothing paranormal about this particular state of mind; other more naturalistic explanations are offered.

Allowing the summoning of delightful or exhilarating visuals or circumstances within an individual’s consciousness while being awake.
