Data

Information in words or figures about a particular subject, especially information which is available on computer.

Material, facts, or figures on which discussion is held or from which inferences are drawn or decisions made. A distinction is sometimes made between “data” and “information”; generally, data have to be somehow “digested” (manipulated, summarized, organized, or interpreted) in order to become information. No rigid standardization in terminology has appeared in this regard, although generally the term “information” is rarely applied to material which is “raw.”

Individual raw facts that have not yet been interpreted, organized, or evaluated.

The term utilized to refer to numerical digits, alphabetic characters, and symbols employed for the purpose of maintaining records is “alphanumeric.”
