Dandruff

Scurf, dead, scaly skin among the hair.

An infection of the sebaceous glands of the scalp, resulting in flaking of the skin.

Pieces of dead skin from the scalp which fall out when the hair is combed.

Condition in which scales of white flaky or grayish waxy material (dead skin) are shed by the scalp. Treatment involves regular use of a detergent shampoo.

Excessive shedding of skin from the scalp. The body normally sheds a certain amount of dead skin from the body surface. Dandruff results in itching and noticeable loose flakes of skin. To control itching and flaking, doctors recommend over-the-counter dandruff shampoos that contain ingredients such as coal tar, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, sulfur, and zinc pyrithione. Medicated shampoos can be harsh on the hair and scalp and may require use of a conditioner afterward.

A common condition in which the scalp is covered with small flakes of dead skin. The flakes, which come away when the hair is brushed or combed, represent an increase in the normal loss of the outermost skin layer. Some types of dandruff are accompanied by inflammation of the scalp to give a type of seborrheic dermatitis. If too little sebum is produced the hair becomes dry and brittle, with the formation of white skin flakes; too much sebum gives greasy hair and yellow flakes. Treatment is by regular washing with a detergent shampoo. Medical name: pityriasis capitis.

Also known as scurf. The white scales shed from the scalp, due to increased production of epidermal surface cells. Treatment is regular washing with an antidandruff shampoo.

Scale that exfoliates from the outer layer layer of the skin, especially from the scalp.

Dandruff refers to a benign condition characterized by the shedding of dead skin from the scalp, resulting in the formation of white flakes. The primary cause of dandruff is typically a rash known as seborrheic dermatitis. However, the good news is that dandruff can usually be effectively managed by regularly using an antidandruff shampoo. The active ingredients in such shampoos help control the excessive flaking of the scalp and minimize the associated symptoms. By incorporating frequent use of antidandruff shampoo into the hair care routine, individuals can successfully control and reduce dandruff, promoting a healthier scalp and reducing the visibility of white flakes.
