Creatinine clearance

Removal of creatinine from the blood by the kidneys.

A test for renal function which measures the degree to which creatinine is cleared from the blood.

A method of assessing the function of the kidney by comparing the amount of creatinine — a product of body metabolism which is normally excreted by the kidneys — in the blood with that appearing in the urine.

This kidney function test involves assessing the concentration of creatinine in both the blood and urine. The blood creatinine level is measured initially, followed by the collection and analysis of urine over a 24-hour period to determine the excreted creatinine level. A comparison is made between the two measurements. If there is an elevated creatinine level in the blood but a low level in the urine, it indicates insufficient clearance of creatinine by the kidneys from the body.
