A piece of stiff clothing worn on the chest or over the trunk to support the body, e.g. after a back injury.
A cloth and elastic back support brace worn to relieve strain by restricting motion in the lower back when a person is in a seated or standing position. Corsets can offer comfort and warmth, as well as support, to the back. Corsets are obtained by prescription or over-the-counter at medical supply stores and some pharmacies. They are typically worn by people who have back injuries and whose work involves lifting; their use should be limited to this purpose. It has never been demonstrated that lumbar corsets prevent back pain. A corset eventually weakens the back muscles if used too frequently or worn for prolonged periods, during which support of the back is provided mostly by the brace and not the muscles.
A support device worn around the trunk to help in the treatment of backache and spinal injuries or disorders.
A wearable apparatus designed to alleviate back pain and address spinal injuries or deformities is known as a trunk brace.
