Computer-aided diagnosis

The application of computer technology in specific diagnostic tests and procedures involves the utilization of computer systems based on probabilities. These systems store extensive information on numerous cases encompassing various disorders, encompassing details such as the nature, location, duration, symptoms, medical background, and diagnosis. By inputting a patient’s symptoms and medical history into the computer, the system compares the provided information with the existing data and generates a compilation of the most probable diagnoses.

While this technology is not yet widely employed in hospitals, its significance lies in assisting individuals who lack access to immediate medical services, such as crews on offshore oil rigs. Computers equipped with visual data interpretation capabilities hold potential for specific blood tests and cervical smear tests where they can identify abnormal cells. Furthermore, computers play a crucial role in investigative procedures like CT scanning and MRI.
