A measure of the distensibility of the lungs. It is expressed as the change in volume of the lungs in liters when the trans pulmonary pressure is changed by 1 cm of water pressure. Normally this measure is between 0.08 and 0.33 L/cm of water. It is reduced by abnormalities that stiffen the lungs or chest wall.
