Collateral circulation

Circulation of the blood through nearby smaller blood vessels when a major vessel is blocked or damaged, collateral blood vessels.

An enlargement of some secondary blood vessels as a response when the main vessels become slowly blocked.

An alternative route provided for the blood by secondary vessels when a primary vessel becomes blocked.

Circulation established through an anastomosis between two vessels supplying or draining two adjacent vascular areas. This enables blood to bypass an obstruction in the larger vessel that supplies or drains both areas or enables blood to flow to or from a tissue when the principal vessel involved is obstructed.

A process in which new blood vessels develop to nourish the areas of the heart muscle that are starved of oxygen and other nutrients.
