Cognitive therapy

A type of psychotherapy, usually focused and problem oriented, directed primarily at identifying and modifying distorted thinking patterns and behavioral dysfunction. This technique is based on the assumption that certain thought patterns, called cognitive structures or schemas, shape the way people react to the situations in their lives. Individuals with major depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and substance use disorders are more likely to benefit.


A treatment method particularly for depressive disorders, that emphasizes the rearrangement of a person’s maladaptive processes of thinking, perceptions, and attitudes.


An approach to therapy that attempts to change some of a person’s habitual modes of thinking is related to behavior therapy.


A treatment of psychiatric disorders such as anxiety or depression which encourages people to deal with their negative ways of thinking.


An abbreviated form of psychotherapy that targets the alteration of individuals’ emotional response patterns by rectifying distorted patterns of thinking and perception.
