A disorder of speech fluency, characterized by speech that has an abnormal, often rapid pace and jerking rhythm; frequent or irregular pauses; multiple nonverbal interjections (“umm,” “ahhh”); and repetitions or circumlocutions. Cluttering speech is often characterized as sounding as though a person has not thought through what he or she wants to say. It is found in people who have other linguistic or behavioral disorders, including anxiety, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, stuttering, or word-finding difficulties, among others.
