The requirement of certain T lymphocytes for the presence of either class I or class II major histocompatibility complex markers on antigen presenting cells. These markers enable the T cells to recognize and respond to foreign antigens. CD4+ T cells require class II antigens and CD8+ T cells require class I antigens. Class restriction is a type of clonal restriction.
