Chicory

A bushy herb often used medicinally or as a dietary supplement. Available at grocery or health food stores.


This particular herbaceous plant, which is widely available and easily cultivable, is commonly subjected to a process wherein its roots are sliced, dried, and roasted. These processed roots are then utilized as a flavor enhancer for ground coffee, or even as a replacement for coffee altogether. Additionally, this plant’s verdant leaves can be utilized in salads and are also known by the name of “curly endive.”


Chicory is a type of salad green with curly leaves and bright blue flowers. It has a bitter taste and is often mixed with other greens in salads. The large roots of chicory are roasted, ground, and blended with coffee to add a bitter flavor to it.
