Certificate of insurance

In group insurance, a statement issued to a member of a group certifying that an insurance contract covering the member has been written and containing a summary of the terms applicable to that member.

A document issued by an insurance company to verify that a particular person or institution is in fact insured for a certain type of risk, during a specific period of time. The dollar limits of the insurance are shown. A hospital may require a COI from each medical staff member, for example, to assure that the member has adequate malpractice insurance coverage.
