  • Vaginal dilator

A glass, plastic, or metal device for dilating the vagina.

  • Venous access device

A specially designed catheter for use in gaining and maintaining access to the venous system. This device provides access for patients who require intravenous fluids or medications for several days or more (e.g., those having a bone marrow transplant or who are receiving long-term total parenteral nutrition).

  • Ventilation device

A ventilation device that provides a peak flow rate of 100% oxygen at up to 40 L/min.

  • Vacuolar degeneration

Swelling of cells with an increase in the number and size of vacuoles.

  • Vitelline cyst

A congenital cyst of the gastrointestinal canal. Lined with ciliated epithelium, it is the remains of the omphalomesenteric duct.

  • Vernal conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis associated with a papillary response, itching, thick, ropy discharge; common in young patients, especially males.

  • Vascular clip

Small titanium or polyglycolic acid vessel clamp used to occlude blood vessels or to perform vascular anastomoses. In the anastomotic application, the clips are used in place of sutures. Advocates believe that this everting technique allows for less endothelial trauma and improved bonding of collagen molecules.

  • Venous claudication

Claudication resulting from inadequate venous drainage.

  • Voltage-gated channel

A gated ion channel that opens in response to a change in the membrane potential of a cell membrane; such channels give muscle fibers and neurons their ability to generate and propagate impulses.

  • Voltage channel

A glycosylated protein in a cell membrane through which ions pass when the electrical potential of the membrane shifts.
