  • Pulse oximeter

    Medical device used to measure the oxygen saturation in the tissue capillaries, using a cliplike device on the finger or earlobe. An oximeter that selectively measures oxygen saturation of “pulsed” (arterial) blood.  

  • Pulmonologists

    Physicians who practice in the treatment of respiratory conditions. A physician trained and certified to treat pulmonary diseases. A medical practitioner who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals afflicted with respiratory conditions and disorders affecting breathing.  

  • Pulmonic stenosis

    Narrowing of a valve that produces an obstruction of blood flow into the pulmonary artery, causing increased preload and right ventricular hypertrophy.  

  • Pulmonary ventilation scan

    Diagnostic study where the patient inhales xenon gas and the images produced using a gamma camera denote the distribution of air in the lungs.  

  • Pulmonary semilunar valve

    Valve between the heart and the pulmonary trunk.  

  • Pulmonary perfusion scan

    Diagnostic study where the patient is given an injection of radioactive albumin into a vein to evaluate blood flow to the lungs using images produced by a gamma camera scanner.  

  • Pulmonary circuit

    Circulation of the blood through the lungs via the pulmonary arteries and veins; transports unoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs, where the blood picks up oxygen, and then returns oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.  

  • Pulmonary atresia

    Absence of the tricuspid or pulmonary valves. Congenital closure of the pulmonary valve between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery.  

  • Puerile

    Concerning a child; childlike quality; used to describe lack of normal neurological or psychological functioning.  

  • Ptyalogogue

    Pharmacological agent that causes an increase in the production of saliva. A medication that stimulates an enhanced production of saliva, also known as a sialogogue.
