  • Provisional callus

    A temporary deposit between the ends of a fractured bone that is reabsorbed when true bone develops.  

  • Pancreatic calculus

    A calculus in the pancreas, made of calcium carbonate with other salts and inorganic materials.  

  • Pathological calcification

    The deposition of calcium in the placenta as a result of placental abruption, infarction, or aging. This form of placental degeneration may contribute to preterm labor and fetal distress.  

  • Pharyngeal bursa

    A small, median, blind sac found in the lower portion of the pharyngeal tonsil.  

  • Patellar bursa

    Formed by several bursae located in the region of the patella; includes the suprapatellar, infrapatellar, and prepatellar bursae. Some communicate with the cavity of the knee joint.  

  • Putrid bronchitis

    A chronic form of bronchitis with foul-smelling sputum.  

  • Plastic bronchitis

    Bronchitis marked by violent cough and paroxysms of dyspnea in which casts of the bronchial tubes are expectorated.  

  • Pursed-lip breathing

    An expiratory maneuver in which the patient exhales through puckered lips to slow expiratory flow and to create slight back pressure. This action may prevent premature closure of intrapulmonary airways, especially in the patient with chronic obstructive lung disease.  

  • Periodic breathing

    An irregular respiratory pattern marked by alternating periods of rapid and slow respirations and by apneic periods lasting 15 sec or less.  

  • Plastic deformation of bone

    A bow shaped deformity of bone from trauma strong enough to cause the bone to bend but not break. It is typically seen in children, especially in the ulna or fibula.
