  • Periosteal lamella

    The bone lamella next to and parallel with the periosteum, forming the external portion of bone.  

  • Prolonged latent phase labor

    Abnormally slow progress of the latent phase, lasting more than 20 hr in a nullipara or 14 hr in a multipara.  

  • Prolonged labor

    Abnormally slow progress of labor, lasting more than 20 hr.  

  • Prodromal labor

    The initial changes that precede actual labor, usually occurring 24 to 48 hr before the onset of labor. Some women report a surge of energy. Findings include lightening, excessive mucoid vaginal discharge, softening and beginning effacement of the ripe cervix, scant bloody show associated with expulsion of the mucus plug, and diarrhea.  

  • Primary dysfunctional labor

    Abnormally slow dilation of the cervix in the active phase of labor; defined as less than 1.2 cm/hr in a nullipara and 1.5 cm/hr in a multipara.  

  • Precipitate labor

    Labor marked by sudden onset, rapid cervical effacement and dilation, and delivery within 3 hr of onset.  

  • Plaster knife

    A stout knife used for cutting and trimming plaster study models in dental practice.  

  • Periodontal knife

    A surgical knife with a scaler-shaped blade whose entire perimeter is a cutting edge. It is used in gingivectomy and other periodontal surgery.  

  • Posterolateral corner knee

    The ligamentous, capsular, and muscular structures that stabilize the knee against varus, external rotation, and anterior/ posterior forces. Disruption of these structures can result in posterolateral rotary instability of the knee.  

  • Pseudophakic bullous keratopathy

    Keratopathy occurring after cataract surgery; more common after placement of an anterior chamber lens. An uncomfortable enlargement of the cornea that occasionally occurs following surgery to replace a cataract-affected lens with an artificial lens.
