  • Lead palsy

    Paralysis of the extremities in lead poisoning.  

  • Light-touch palpation

    The process of determining the outline of abdominal organs by lightly palpating the abdominal wall with the fingers.  

  • Ion pair

    Two particles of opposite charge, usually an electron and a proton. A positively charged ion and an equivalently charged negative ion, typically an electron, generated through the impact of radiation on a neutral atom or molecule.  

  • Lung pain

    Sharp pain in the region of the lungs.  

  • Lingual pain

    Pain in the tongue that may be due to local lesions, glossitis, fissures, or pernicious anemia.  

  • Lightning pain

    A sudden brief pain that may be repetitive, usually in the legs but may be at any location. It is associated with tabes dorsalis and other neurological disorders.  

  • Localized alveolar ossification

    A localized inflammation of a tooth socket following extraction. Destruction of the primary clot results in denuded bone surfaces. Treatment includes irrigation and placement of medications into the bony void.  

  • Lymphatic organ

    A structure composed principally of lymphatic tissue. It includes the lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, and thymus.  

  • Lesser omentum

    The portion of the omentum that passes from the lesser curvature of the stomach to the transverse fissure of the liver.  

  • Lavender oil

    An essential oil derived from Lavandula angustifolia, a plant with pale purple flowers. The oil is used in aromatherapy to alleviate pain (e.g., during acupressure, massage, and childbirth).
