  • Latent syphilis

    The phase of syphilis during which symptoms are absent and the disease can be diagnosed only by serological tests.  

  • Local syncope

    Numbness of a part with sudden blanching, as of the fingers; a symptom of Raynaud’s disease or of local asphyxia. Abrupt whitening and numbness in a specific area.  

  • Laryngeal syncope

    Brief unconsciousness following coughing and tickling in the throat. A larynx contraction accompanied by dizziness and a brief loss of awareness.  

  • Labyrinthine symptom

    A group of symptoms (e.g., tinnitus, vertigo, or nausea) indicating a disease or lesion of the inner ear.  

  • Locking suture

    A continuous suture in which the needle is passed through the loop of the preceding stitch; more commonly referred to as a locking suture.  

  • Lambdoid suture

    A suture between the parietal bones and the two superior borders of the occipital bone.  

  • Lung volume reduction surgery

    The removal of emphysematous lung tissue (especially inelastic air spaces in the upper lobes of the lungs) to enhance the ability of the rest of the lung to expand and contract. This procedure improves respiratory function for many patients with advanced chronic obstructive lung disease although the long-term benefits of its use are uncertain.  

  • Low threshold substance

    A substance such as urea or uric acid that is excreted by the kidney from the blood almost in its entirety. It occurs in the urine in high concentrations.  

  • Lacunar stroke

    A pathological change in the brain caused by diminished or no blood flow through one of the brain’s small penetrating arteries. When this occurs, there may be no clinically detectable changes in the patient or signs and symptoms of stroke. A group of little strokes may cause progressive dementia.  

  • Leather-bottle stomach

    A condition of the stomach caused by hypertrophy of the stomach walls or their infiltration with malignant cells. A term used to describe a stomach that has significantly thickened due to cancer infiltration.
