  • Heat ray

Radiation whose wavelength is between 3,900 and 14,000 A.U. Shorter wavelength heat sources penetrate tissues better than longer (infrared) sources.

  • Hard ray

An x-ray photon of short wavelength and great penetrative power.

  • Hemorrhagic rash

A rash consisting chiefly of bleeding or bruising into or under the skin.

  • Homogeneous radiation

Radiation containing photons of similar wavelength. When utilizing three-phase generating x-ray equipment, radiation is produced that exhibits a narrow band of frequencies and wavelengths that are similar in nature.

  • Heterogeneous radiation

Radiation containing waves of various wavelengths.

  • Hazard quotient

A numerical ratio used to estimate whether a toxic exposure will prove harmful to an exposed person or ecosystem. The ratio is typically expressed as the measurable toxic exposure to a screening benchmark, such as the highest concentration of the toxicant known not to cause harm. An HQ greater than 1.0 is potentially toxic. An…

  • Health related quality of life

The measurable impact of a person’s perception of his or her health and the effect that produces on satisfaction with life and well-being. HRQOL is influenced by functional and socioeconomic status; by health risks; and by the beliefs, cultural milieu, policies, and practices of society.

  • Hepatic pulse

A pulse due to expansion of veins of the liver at each ventricular contraction.

  • High-mobility-group box chromosomal protein

A component of chromatin, released as a cytokine in the systemic inflammatory response of sepsis.

  • Heat prostration

Exhaustion resulting from exposure to excessive heat.
