  • Gravity drip

    Infusion of an intravenous solution by hanging the source of the solution above the patient and controlling the rate of flow with a manually operated clamp.  

  • Genetic dressing

    The chance variation of genetic frequency, seen most often in a small population.  

  • Gastric diverticulum

    A pulsion-type diverticulum usually on the lesser curvature of the esophagogastric junction.  

  • Gynecological dilator

    An instrument for dilating the cervix uteri.  

  • Goodell’s dilator

    An instrument similar to the Bossi dilator except that it has three prongs.  

  • Gray degeneration

    Degeneration in myelinated nerve tissue due to chronic inflammation, causing the nerve tissue to turn gray.  

  • Granulovacuolar degeneration

    A pathological finding in the brain cells of some patients with Alzheimer’s dementia in which the neuronal cytoplasm is partly replaced by cavities that contain particles resembling grit or sand.  

  • Gunstock deformity

    A deformity in which the forearm, when extended, makes an angle with the arm because of displacement of the axis of the extended arm. It is caused by a condylar fracture at the elbow.  

  • Gastrointestinal decontamination

    Cleansing of the gastrointestinal tract to remove toxic substances, pills taken in overdose, or microorganisms. Activated charcoal or polyethylene glycol solutions (e.g., Golytely) given orally reduce the uptake of many drugs from the gastrointestinal tract. Before bowel surgery, oral antibiotics (e.g., neomycin) may be given to reduce the number of bacteria within the intestines.  

  • Gas cylinder

    A high-pressure, nonreactive, seamless tempered steel container for compressed gas used for medical, therapeutic, or diagnostic purposes.
