Fibroid heart
An obsolete term for scarring of the myocardium (e.g., after myocardial infarction).

Fatty infiltration of the heart
An abnormal accumulation of triglycerides in the myocardium, seen on biopsy specimens as clear vacuoles or droplets.

Functional position of hand
The principle used in splint fabrication whereby the wrist is dorsiflexed 20 to 35 degrees, a normal transverse arch is maintained, and the thumb is in abduction and opposition and aligned with the pads of the four fingers. Proximal interphalangeal joints are flexed 45 to 60 degrees.

Fick’s halo
A colored halo around light observed by some persons as a result of wearing contact lenses.

Fixott-everett grid
A plastic-embedded screen placed over dental radiographic film before x-ray exposure. It facilitates measurement of bone loss and other tissue changes.

Foreign body granuloma
Chronic inflammation around foreign bodies such as sutures, talc, splinters, or gravel.

Fat gram
A standard measure of fat and the calories (9 kcal/g) contained. Counting and limiting fat grams is a method used in weight-reduction diets.

A graft of the entire layer of skin without the subcutaneous fat.

A graft that is completely separated from its original site and then transferred.
