  • Five factor model

    Also known as the Big Five; the five relatively independent factors of neuroticism, extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness.  

  • Fight-or-flight

    Cannon’s term for the body’s physiological activation response when it prepares to fight off or flee from a threat.  

  • Fitness target zone

    Optimum intensity range for exercise. The lower limit of the zone is the threshold of training; the upper limit is the maximum amount of exercise that is beneficial for health-related fitness.  

  • Friendship

    A give-and-take relationship based on mutual trust, acceptance, and common interests or values.  

  • Free-floating anger

    The frustration and hostility that sometimes result when people feel unable to improve their lives.  

  • Foster family

    A family in which an adult or couple provides care and a temporary home for children whose biological parents are unable to care for them. Parents who take care of children whose own parents are unable to do so.  

  • Fortified

    Term used to describe a food that has had nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, or proteins, added to it, which it does not normally contain.  

  • Flash flood

    A flood that occurs suddenly, without warning, after a heavy rainfall or snow melt.  

  • Flexor spasm

    Involuntary, sometimes painful contractions of the flexor muscles, which pull the legs upward into a clenched position. These spasms, which last 2 to 3 seconds, are symptoms of spasticity. They often occur during sleep, but can also occur when the person is in a seated position.  

  • Failure to store

    A type of neurogenic bladder dysfunction in MS resulting from demyelination of the pathways between the spinal cord and brain. Typically seen in a small, spastic bladder, storage failure can cause symptoms of urinary urgency, frequency, incontinence, and nocturia.
