  • Dorsal root ganglion

A mass of nerve tissue containing the cell bodies of sensory neurons that is located on the dorsal surface of the nerve root. A ganglion located on the dorsal root of a spinal nerve. It contains the cell bodies of sensory neurons.

  • Dorsal root

Sensory nerve fibers of the spinal cord. The radix dorsalis or sensory root of each spinal nerve.

  • Dorsal reflex

Involuntary contraction of the muscles of the back in response to irritation of the skin over the erector spinae muscles. Irritation of the skin over the erector spinae muscles, causing contraction of muscles of the back.

  • Dorsal recumbent

Position of a patient lying down on the back, with the face up.

  • Dorsal ramus

Branch of spinal nerves that passes on the back surface to innervate skin, muscle, and bones of the vertebral column.

  • Dorsal muscles

Skeletal muscles of the back including the trapezius and latissimus dorsi.

  • Dorsal horn

Horn-shaped projection of gray matter in the posterior region of the spinal cord. The posterior horn of the gray matter of the spinal cord. Anatomical region of the spinal cord that receives sensory signals for processing and relay.

  • Dorsal column

White matter in the posterior region of the spinal cord that contains motor neurons.

  • Dorsai

    Pertaining to back part.

  • Distributive shock

Abnormal pooling of blood in the extremities due to anaphylaxis, sepsis, or spinal cord injury. Shock in which there is a marked decrease in peripheral vascular resistance and consequent hypotension. Examples are septic shock, neurogenic shock, and anaphylactic shock.
