  • Adjuvant chemotherapy

    The giving of cytotoxic drugs to eradicate cancerous cells that may remain in the body after surgery or radiation therapy. The administration of medication following surgery to eliminate a maximum number of remaining cancer cells is referred to as postoperative drug treatment.  

  • Analytical chemistry

    Chemistry concerned with the detection of chemical substances (qualitative analysis) or the determination of the amounts of substances (quantitative analysis) in a compound.  

  • Acquired characteristic

    A trait or quality that was not inherited but is the result of environmental influence.  

  • Anion channel

    Channels in red blood cells that cross the cell membrane. Chloride ions (CL) and bicarbonate ions (HC03‾) are exchanged via these channels.  

  • Human centrifuge

    A device that accommodates a human subject being rotated while suspended from a long arm. It is used to investigate the ability of subjects to withstand positive gravitational forces.  

  • Autonomic center

    The center in the brain or spinal cord that regulates any of the activities under the control of the autonomic nervous system. Most centers are located in the hypothalamus, medulla oblongata, and spinal cord.  

  • Association center

    Center controlling associated movements.  

  • Acoustic center

    The hearing center in the brain; located in the temporal lobe of the cerebrum.  

  • Mossy cell

    An astrocyte or other glial cell with many branching processes.  

  • Atypical glandular cell

    An abnormal finding on a Pap test. This classification is divided into “favor neoplasia” or “not otherwise specified (NOS)”. NOS is subdivided into endocervical or endometrial origin. Atypical endocervical cells are important because of their risk for significant disease.
