Ape hand
A deformity of the hand in which the thumb is permanently extended, usually caused by a median nerve injury. Paralysis and atrophy of the thenar muscles result. An abnormality in the hand that is observed in cases of progressive muscular atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Acute alcoholic hallucinosis
Alcohol withdrawal, marked by visual hallucinations, extreme agitation, tachycardia, hypertension, and other signs and symptoms of cerebral and autonomic hyperactivity.

Auditory hair
The stereocilia of a specialized epithelial cell. These are present in the ear in the spiral organ of Corti, concerned with hearing; and in the crista ampullaris, macula utriculi, and macula sacculi, concerned with equilibrium.

A gyrus of the parietal lobe that encloses the posterior end of the superior temporal sulcus.

Granulosis rubra nasi
A disease of the skin of the nose, characterized by a moist erythematous patch on numerous macules. The disease is caused by an inflammatory infiltration about the nose, with slightly elevated papules and dilated sweat glands.

Azurophilic granule
A small red or reddish purple granule that easily takes a stain with azure dyes. Found in lymphocytes and monocytes, it is inconstant in number, being present in about 30% of the cells.

Albuminous granule
A cytoplasmic granule in many normal cells. It is not affected by ether or chloroform but disappears from view when acetic acid is added.

Acidophil granule
A granule that stains readily with acid dyes.
