Catarrh

Inflammation of the mucous membranes in the nose and throat, creating an excessive amount of mucus.


Simple inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Also called chronic rhinitis. If it occurs in the pollen season, it is called hay fever.


The excessive secretion of thick phlegm or mucus by the mucous membrane of the nose, nasal sinuses, nasopharynx, or air passages. The term is not used in any precise or scientific sense.


Inflammation of the mucous membranes, particularly those of the air passages, associated with a copious secretion of mucus. Commonly the result of infection or local allergy, catarrh can affect the nose, middle ear and sinuses.


Term formerly applied to inflammation of mucous membranes, especially of the head and throat.

In medical terms, mild irritation of a mucous membrane is known as catarrh. While this can technically apply to any mucous membrane within the body, the term is most commonly used to describe inflammation in the nasal or bronchial passages.
