A colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that results from the incomplete combustion of any carbon-containing substance is absorbed by the red blood cells more readily than oxygen which consequently can result in asphyxiation.

The carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) formed becomes unavailable for oxygen transportation. In addition, the partial saturation of the Hb molecule results in tighter oxygen binding, impairing delivery to the tissues. CO also binds to Myoglobin and respiratory cytochrome enzymes. Exposure to CO at levels of 500 parts per million (ppm) would be expected to cause mild symptoms only and exposure to levels of 4,000 ppm would be rapidly fatal.

A highly toxic gas that is both colorless and odorless, carbon monoxide is produced when coal and other substances undergo incomplete combustion. It can be found in domestic coal gas and is known for its paralyzing effects on the body’s muscle system, which occur long before a person loses consciousness. This paralyzing action prevents individuals who may have reconsidered their actions from escaping the danger of the gas, particularly if they attempted suicide by inhaling it. Carbon monoxide is also a component of sewer gases and afterdamp (the poisonous gas released in coal mines after explosions). It has been detected after explosions of shells or bombs in confined spaces. Interestingly, the skin of those who have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning often displays a peculiar and attractive pink coloration.
