Carbolic acid

Phenol, an antiseptic first used by Joseph Lister.


Carbolic acid, or phenol, was the precursor of all antiseptics. It paralyses and then destroys most forms of life, particularly organisms such as bacteria. It has been superseded by less penetrative and harmful antiseptics.


A potent disinfectant originating from coal tar, also known as carbolic acid or phenol.
