Cancer screening

Tests performed on people without symptoms to identify possible cancer at an early stage. Screening tests have been used effectively for cancers of the breast, cervix, colon, and prostate gland. Screening for lung cancer is not yet successful.

A small, painful sore or ulcer that occurs inside the mouth. It is usually surrounded by an area of redness less than a few millimeters (around an inch) in diameter. Canker sores commonly first appear when a person is in his or her 20s or 30s. The sores tend to disappear in 1 to 2 weeks. Recurrences are common and may be induced by trauma, eating spicy or citrus foods, and menstruation.

A program to detect cancer before it causes symptoms or signs, especially before it metastasizes and threatens life or health. Common modes of cancer screening include Pap testing for cervical cancer and mammography for breast cancer.

Early investigations conducted to identify cancer prior to the manifestation of symptoms play a crucial role in medical diagnosis. Cancer screening methods are specifically employed among specific cohorts who are believed to be vulnerable due to factors such as age, profession, lifestyle choices, or inherent genetic disposition. Timely identification significantly enhances the likelihood of successful treatment and recovery. Remarkable progress has been observed in minimizing mortality rates associated with conditions such as cervical, breast, bladder, and colon cancers through the implementation of tests, including the cervical smear test.
