Buffer solution

A solution of a weak acid and its salt (e.g., carbonic acid, sodium bicarbonate) of importance in maintaining a constant pH, especially of the blood.

A solution created by combining a weak acid or a weak base with a salt of the weak base. This solution can withstand significant shifts in its pH (acid-alkali balance) when small quantities of acid or alkali are added or when diluted with water.
