A type of rod-shaped bacterium.
Bacteriological genus within the family Brucellaceae, the Brucella are small Gram-negative cocco-bacilli associated with undulant fever in man, and contagious abortion in animals (particularly cows). The organisms are non-motile, non-sporing, and the species are differentiated culturally by their need for CO2, production of H2S, and inhibition by basic fuchsin and thionin. Primary isolation is best achieved with liver agar or liver broth.
Agenus of Gram-negative aerobic spherical or rod-like parasitic bacteria responsible for ‘brucellosis (undulant fever) in man and contagious abortion in cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats. The principal species are B. abortus and B. melitensis. Brucella ring test is a diagnostic test for brucellosis involving the clumping together of a standard Brucella strain by antibodies in an infected person’s serum.
A genus of gram-negative, aerobic, coccobacilh that are pathogenic to humans and cause undulant fever and abortion in cattle, hogs, and goats.
A group of bacteria found in both humans and domestic animals.
