Brose

A concoction typically made by combining oatmeal and water, which can be supplemented with ingredients such as meat, cabbage, and so on.

A nourishing and hearty Scottish dish, with similarities to gruel, is created by pouring boiling water over oatmeal or barley, before stirring the mixture thoroughly and adding salt to taste. For a more indulgent variation, one can add milk and butter or cream to the recipe. The versatility of this dish is further exemplified by the ability to incorporate a variety of ingredients such as fish, meat or vegetables to create distinct variations such as mussel, beef or kale brose. In instances where the dish is enhanced with the addition of whisky, it is commonly referred to as Athol Brose.
