Loud, rumbling, gurgling noises produced by the intestines. Borborygmi are sometimes referred to as a growling stomach. They occur during hyperactive intestinal peristalsis (the wavelike muscle movement that moves food through the digestive tract). This increased activity may be the result of gastroenteritis, diarrhea, Or hunger. when they are high-pitched and accompanied by other symptoms, such as vomiting, distension, and abdominal cramps, borborygmi may indicate an intestinal obstruction.
The term used in medicine to describe bowel sounds that can be heard without the need for a stethoscope is “audible peristalsis.”
Gurgling sounds in the intestines, often caused by the movement of gas or liquid, may be a sign of a nervous disorder or potential intestinal blockage.
