Bodywork

Methods of therapeutic manipulation of the body to reduce pain and improve patterns of movement. Bodywork includes more than 80 different types of massage therapy, most of which are used to release muscle tension, improve blood flow, and reduce pain associated with muscle spasm. Other forms of bodywork seek to organize and integrate the body by correcting inappropriate patterns of movement, thereby bringing about more balanced use of the body. Several approaches to bodywork exist, including the Alexander technique, the Feldenkrais method, Rolfing, and the Tracer approach. Other forms of bodywork, such as Thai massage and reflexology, seek to restore balance or harmony to the body by applying pressure to key points on the body thought to be associated with the flow of energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”).

An encompassing expression encompassing an assortment of therapies that incorporate practices such as massage, realignment of the body, and analogous techniques. These modalities are employed to address profound and enduring tensions and traumas ingrained within the bodily tissues.
