Birthing centers

Facilities that provide a broad range of care at a single location for pregnant women who are at low risk for having complications in labor. Traditionally operated by nurse-midwives or physicians in freestanding locations, birthing centers typically offer prenatal education and care, a site for labor and delivery, and postnatal care in a single location, with access to acute care as needed. The birthing center approach has been adopted by many hospitals. Women with heart disease, diabetes, multiple fetuses, or other conditions that increase the risk of complications for the mother or the baby should not deliver outside a traditional hospital.
