Author: Glossary

  • Type B exerciser

A person who is motivated to exercise for health benefits.

  • Type A exerciser

A person who is motivated to exercise by competition and intensity.

  • Turbulent flow

Irregular movement of a fluid with movement varying at any fixed point. Rushing or uneven flow of blood in a vessel, usually caused by a partial obstruction. A movement of gas in disorderly currents, associated with high velocity and high density with increased tubing diameter.

  • Turbulence

    Disturbed or disrupted water flow.

  • True resting heart rate

Heart rate taken in the morning for three consecutive days (after waking but before rising) and then averaged.

  • Transverse plane

The imaginary horizontal plane that divides the body into upper and lower halves. A plane at right angles to the sagittal plane, running horizontally across the body.

  • Transtheoretical model

Readiness for change. With five stages, the model is intended to explain or predict a person’s success or failure in achieving a proposed behavior change, such as developing different habits.

  • Transitional deep-water training

A training format that provides an option for suspended training in transitional depths (water too shallow for traditional deep-water exercise and too deep for traditional shallow-water exercise). Both suspended moves and movements touching the bottom are possible and appropriate cues must be given for safety and form.

  • Transitional cue

A verbal or nonverbal instruction to make a change in activity or direction.

  • Transition move

One of the three categories of transitions for deep-water exercise, this involves putting a simple movement (typically a knee-high jog) between two moves to make the transition more fluid.
