Impaired
A descriptive term which, when applied to a professional such as a physician, usually encompasses physical handicaps, alcoholism, drug dependence, senility, mental illness, or, sometimes, behavior problems.

Hotel-hospital
A hotel facility operated by a hospital, at hotel rates, for use by patients and their families before and after hospitalization. Such facilities are sometimes used for temporary care for elderly patients in order to give their family caregivers a rest. If separated from the hospital, the hotel-hospital often provides shuttle bus service.

Hospitalization
A period of stay in the hospital. Also, the placing of a patient in the hospital. The confinement of a patient in a hospital.

The annual publication of the American Hospital Association (AHA) covering hospitals in the United States, and giving descriptions of each as well as tabulated data on hospitals.

Hospice program
A program that assists with the physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological, social, financial, and legal needs of the dying patient and her family. Home life care
Supportive services provided by an agency in order to permit an individual who is able to carry out the activities of daily living (ADL) to remain at home rather than being placed in an institution. Holding company
A corporation organized for the purpose of owning the stock of another corporation or corporations; or any company which owns such a large portion of the stock of a corporation that it controls that corporation.

Healthy community
An unofficial label which a community often gives itself when it has established and continues an organized effort to achieve optimum health for all its residents and visitors, using the resources available, and in response to ifs own perceived needs. Such a community is part of the healthy communities movement.
