Author: Glossary

  • Photochemistry

The branch of chemistry concerned with the effects of light rays.

  • Photobiotic

Capable of living only in the light.

  • Photobiomodulation

The use of low-intensity light, typically in the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, to stimulate body tissues, relieve inflammation and pain, improve wound healing, or regenerate damaged cells. It is also known as low level laser therapy, or cold laser therapy.

  • Photobiology

The study of the effect of light on living things.

  • Photobacterium damsela

A gram-negative bacillus formerly classified in the genus Vibrio. It is a cause of fulminant wound infections.

  • Photoautotrophic

Capable of synthesizing nutrients from light and inorganic chemicals. Said of certain microorganisms, such as bacteria that contain chlorophyll.

  • Photoactinic

Emitting both luminous and actinic rays. Emitting both light-producing and actinic rays. Actinic rays are the ones that induce chemical changes in tissues.

  • Photism

A subjective sensation of color or fight produced by a stimulus of another sense, such as smell, hearing, taste, or touch.

  • Photic sneezing

Sneezing initiated or hastened in its onset by light stimulus. It is sometimes due to light causing tears, which, upon draining into the nasal area, cause sneezing.

  • Photic driving

Exposing a subject to flashing lights during an EEG (electroencephalographic) recording.
