Asperger’s disorder

A pervasive developmental characterized by gross and sustained impairment in social interaction and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities occurring in the context of preserved cognitive and language development.

A developmental disorder characterized by poor social skills, repetitive behaviors, and focused interest in an esoteric topic that limits social and occupational functioning.

A pervasive developmental disorder that is probably related to autism but is not associated with delays in language development. Treatment is generally directed at symptoms, such as poor relationships with peers or family members or the inability to adapt to school or work. Methods of treatment may include family therapy, group social skills training, and individual coaching. Medication may be necessary to treat coexisting psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Psychological evaluation for specific learning disorders and appropriate educational remediation is usually needed for people with Asperger disorder.
