Artifact

Synthetic object found in a body part, especially something (as a clip or thread) seen on an X-ray film or in a microscopic field, that does not normally belong there.

A structure seen in a tissue under a microscope that is not present in the living tissue. Artifacts, which are produced by faulty fixation or staining of the tissue, may give a false impression that disease is present.

A foreign body found in living tissue as viewed under a microscope. It is usually caused by faulty preparation of a specimen, with the result that disease or abnormality seems to be present.

A mark on the x-ray film can be attributed to an accident or rough handling that occurred during the processing stage.

Any substance or material that is not naturally found in living tissue; synthetic.
