Anthracycline

Type of antibiotic that comes from the fungus Streptococcus peucetius. Anthracyclines are used as treatments for cancer. Examples include daunorubicin (Daunomycin), doxorubicin (Adriamycin), and epirubicin (Ellence). All drugs of this class can cause severe heart damage, even months or years after the patient has stopped taking them.


Antibiotics that destroy tumour cells: examples include aclarubicin, daunorubicin, doxorubicin, epirubicin and idarubicin.


Any of several antibiotic-based drugs that block DNA synthesis in tumors. They are used to treat solid organ cancers (e.g., breast cancer) and leukemias. Examples include daunorubicin, doxorubicin, and mitoxantrone.
