Angiocardiography

An X-ray examination of the cardiac system after injection with an opaque dye so that the organs show up clearly on the film.

X-ray examination of the chambers of the heart after introducing a radio-opaque contrast medium into the blood in the heart. The contrast medium is injected directly into the atria, ventricles, or great vessels of the heart by means of a slim sterile flexible tube {cardiac catheter), which is manipulated into position from an accessible point, such as a vein or artery in a limb catheterization). Its progress through the heart is followed by a rapid series of X-ray films or by the use of motion-picture film (cineangiocardio-graphy). The X-ray is called an angio-cardiogram. Angiocardiography is an important aid in diagnosing and planning the surgical repair of heart defects.

Radiography of the heart and associated blood vessels after injection of a radio-opaque substance.

Serial imaging, usually cineradiography, of the heart and great blood vessels after intravascular or intracardiac injection of a water-soluble contrast medium.
