The leading national professional organization in the United States for physicians who specialize in PSYCHIATRY. Founded in 1844 as the Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane, the association changed its name to the American Medico-Psychological Association in 1891 and adopted its present name in 1921. The association is governed by a board of trustees, whose primary function is to formulate and implement the policies and programs of the association, and by an assembly of district branches representing the membership. Numerous councils, committees, commissions, and task forces analyze issues and make recommendations to the trustees and assembly.

The Association is governed by a board of 19 elected trustees whose primary function is to formulate and implement the policies and programs of the Association, and by an Assembly of District Branches representing the membership which may approve or disapprove, but not reverse, actions of the Board of Trustees. Numerous councils, committees, commissions, and task forces furnish the data and recommendations on which the Trustees and Assembly base their deliberations. The Association had more than 33,000 members at the end of 1986. Its headquarters are at 1400 K Street, N.W., Washing- ton, DC 20005.
