Alcohol, drug abuse, and mental health administration (ADAMHA)

An agency in the U.S. Department of health and human service that was replaced in 1992 by the substance abuse and mental health services administration. In reorganizing alcohol, drug abuse, and mental health administration into SAMHSA, the three alcohol, drug abuse, and mental health administration research institutes—the national institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism, the national institute on drug abuse (NIDA), and the national institute on mental health (NIMH)—were moved to thenational institute of health (NIH). The substance abuse and mental health services programs remain in SAMHSA.


An agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that provides leadership, policies, and goals for the federal effort to assure the treatment and rehabilitation of persons with alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and mental illness. ADAMHA is responsible for administering grants to advance and support research, and training, to individuals, institutions and agencies, and service programs through block grants to the states.


Created in 1973 as a branch of the United States Public Health Service which incorporated the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
