Scleromalacia

A condition of the sclera in which holes appear in it.

Severe thinning of the white of the eye (sclera). Scleromalacia occurs in people with rheumatoid arthritis. The eye is not inflamed and not painful. Rarely, perforation can occur without trauma.

Thinning of the sclera (white of the eye) as a result of inflammation. The involved area becomes bluish in color. Sometimes the sclera fades away completely in an area, and the underlying tissue (usually the ciliary body) bulges beneath the conjunctiva. This state is known as scleromalacia perforans.

Scleral thinning, a common complication of scleritis, particularly when linked with rheumatoid arthritis, leads to the softening of the outer white layer of the eye.
