Ablation therapy

The destruction of small areas of myocardial tissue, usually by application of electrical or chemical energy, in the treatment of some tachyarrhythmias.

A procedure in which a catheter (thin tube) is used to control certain types of abnormally fast, uncoordinated heartbeats, or arrhythmias, by destroying the small areas of heart tissue that are the focus of the abnormality. Destruction of the tissue causing the heart to beat quickly and uncontrollably can prevent arrhythmias from developing and allows the heart to return to a more normal rhythm.

A technique employed for managing arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation. In this procedure, a slender, pliable tube known as a catheter is introduced into a vein and navigated to the heart. Through the catheter, a series of rapid electrical pulses is administered to sever the pathway responsible for the irregular cardiac rhythm within the heart.
