A drug that is part of the treatment for bacterial infections such as tuberculosis.

Ethambutol is a synthetic drug, often included in the treatment regimen of tuberculosis when the infection is thought to be resistant to other drugs. The main side-effects are visual disturbances, chiefly loss of acuity and colour blindness. Such toxic effects are more common when excessive dosages are used, or the patient has some renal impairment, in which case the drug should be avoided — as it should in young children.
Ethambutol is a medication employed alongside other drugs to treat tuberculosis. Although it seldom causes side effects, it may, on occasion, lead to inflammation of the optic nerve, resulting in blurred vision.
